How Do You Optimize a PPC Campaign?
Answered 20 August 2026 · Written and reviewed by Chris Krassnig
Optimize a PPC campaign by cutting waste before adding budget: read the search terms report, exclude what cannot sell, then move spend to the products and keywords that earn. Scaley AI runs that loop 24/7 and prepares each move for your approval, and we build Scaley, so weigh that.
Cut Waste Before You Add Budget
Every account has money leaking somewhere, and finding it is cheaper than earning more. Open the search terms report, sort by cost, and read what people actually typed. Anything that could never buy what you sell gets excluded. Then look at products: the ones that spend and never convert are funding the ones that do.
This is unglamorous, and on most accounts it is the best hour you will spend all week. The first audit in our case studies found four figures a month of waste in an account its owners thought was already tight. It was not a bidding problem. It was spend pointed at things that were never going to sell.
Then Move Budget Toward Margin
Google optimizes toward whatever you tell it to value, and by default that is revenue. Revenue is not profit. A 60% margin bestseller and a 12% margin filler look identical to a bidding algorithm unless you say otherwise.
So the second move is telling it. Tag your products by margin and by how fast they sell, push those tags into your Merchant Center custom labels, and let campaign priority and target ROAS work off the tags. On a thin-margin catalogue this is usually the single biggest win available, ahead of any bid tweak.
Only after those two do bids and budgets earn your attention. An account with a messy feed and a clever bid strategy still loses to a clean feed on defaults.
What to Automate, and What to Keep
Automate the parts that are frequent, boring and reversible. Daily search term mining. Label syncing. Watching for the anomaly at 2am. Scaley AI does exactly that: it reads your live account 24/7, prepares each move with the reason attached, and writes nothing to your account until you approve it. That is our own software talking, so weigh it.
Keep the parts that are rare, expensive and hard to undo. Which products you push this season. What the offer is. Whether the landing page is honest. That is strategy, and a senior buyer or a good agency is worth paying for it. Most brands run both, and the retainer usually drops because nobody is billing for the grunt work any more.
If you want to build the automation yourself, Optmyzr publishes Rule Engine Automations on every plan tier and is built for teams who want that workbench. Scaley has no rule builder. That is a different product doing a different job.
